Senior Adult

YahYah’s (Fellowship of the Young At Heart’s)
Young at Heart is a group of Senior Adults of First Baptist Church who are aged 55 and older. Our church feels this group is so important that they have their own Pastor, Rev. Judy Butler. Her job is to coordinate activities, bring short devotionals to gatherings, make visits to those home-bound, in hospitals and nursing homes, and to share preaching duties.

The purpose of the group is to promote Christian fellowship and support and to provide travel and exploring opportunities around North Carolina and beyond. In most events, friends and relatives are welcome to join us. There is at least one activity or luncheon scheduled per month. Young at Heart in-house activities meet in our church Fellowship Hall. The away adventures usually are traveled by church van or church bus.

The Young at Heart bulletin board is located in the hallway outside the Fellowship Hall. Information about future events and trips and sign-up sheets can be found here. There is also a twice-monthly group of senior adults who meet in the library for games and fellowship.

Activities in the past have included trips to the Raleigh Art Museum, Southern Supreme Fruitcake Factory, Shatley Springs, Asheboro Zoo and a few even ventured to Nova Scotia last fall! Our next big trip will be to the Amish Country. There have also been special guests to speak on topics of interest such as prescription medications, fire safety for Senior Adults, Medicare issues, community volunteer opportunities, and more!

Newcomers are always welcome! As this is an active fellowship, the group will have different faces each month. Come join us and see what fun and new adventures await! Praise be to our Father who gives us a wonderful world to explore and love to share! For more information, please contact Rev. Judy Butler.

GAME TIME!
All adults are invited to meet at 2:00 p.m. in room #309 on the third floor for a wonderful time of fellowship and old-fashioned games. Meeting each Wednesday, we play checkers, dominoes, Bingo, Chicken Foot, and more! This is an open group and anyone is welcome to join us whenever you are free.

JANUARY'S NEWSLETTER ARTICLE

Dear Family, Friends, and Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

2011 has come to an end and 2012 has arrived amid fanfare for some and sleep for others.  Either way – a New Year is here.  What does that really mean for us: new opportunities, new challenges, new failures?  In all of this are opportunities to demonstrate what God really means to you and what He has done or will do for you.  Below is a devotional written by Os Hillman and I would like to share it with you because it addresses the idea of entering into a new year and a new future with God.

Going Beyond Your Paradigm
TGIF Today God Is First by Os Hillman

"So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even upon him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth. He stripped off his robes and also prophesied in Samuel's presence. He lay that way all that day and night. This is why people say, 'Is Saul also among the prophets?'"
(1 Sam 19:23-24)

Whenever God calls you into a new thing (Year), you can expect to do things you've never done. Saul had just been anointed to be the first king of Israel. He was being launched into a whole new calling. He was hanging out with the spiritual leaders of the nation.

When he began to prophesy the prophets wondered if he, too, was a prophet. He was not a prophet but God was doing a new thing through Saul - activating something in him that had been dormant until then.

When God calls you into a new endeavor you will find that God will anoint you in areas you considered your weakest traits. God turns shepherds like Moses into leaders of nations. He turns farmers like Gideon into reformers. He turns impetuous and unstable personalities like Peter into leaders that can transform a culture and lead a movement.

Whenever God does a new thing in a life, those who knew them before notice the change. Quiet people become bold. Poor speakers learn to become great communicators. Those who were never leaders before become the new leaders. This is the way of God.

When God looks at an individual, He looks at their future, not their past. He is always looking at the person He has created you to become, not the person you are now. When Samuel anointed the young shepherd boy, David, to be the next king of Israel, it would be years before this would happen. However, God already knew who he was to become.

How does God view your life? What is the destiny He has chosen you to fulfill?
